Shut Up Sona
India I 85 mins I Documentary I 2020 I Hindi, English,
& Oriya w/ English subtitles
A legal notice arrives one day at Sona’s doorstep, accusing her of Blasphemy. Her offense? Singing an 800-year-old song with devotional lyrics, while being dressed “obscenely”.
She's advised to back off, but Sona isn't compatible with that edict. A music icon and self styled trouble-maker, Sona finds inspiration in the mystics and poets of India from centuries past; those who questioned the social order and had their voices reinterpreted and their rebellion covered to suit the patriarchy.
The film, like Sona, is laced with sarcasm, wit, and a bit of wildness. SHUT UP SONA resonates with every woman’s search for space in a culture ridden with millennia of misogyny. This is a film about music, art, social change, and the clashing of the ancient and modern. It’s about our right to exist, with a voice.
